You may want to note that the character of Laura was actually modeled after one of Porter's close friends, Mary Doherty. (Though I do agree with you that most of Laura's interactions are autobiographical)
Yeah I'm looking more at what the stories tell us in relation to Porter's relationship with Mexico. I'm trying not to take in Porter's views/opinions or what she says everything means (which is why I'm not using letters) because she doesn't think she is representing an exotic (she thinks she's representing something familiar). Laura as Porter just basically fits into what I personally believe gives a good representation of Porter in Mexico.
