Hi Vince! Your paper topic is really fascinating! For the whole semester, I have grappled with the issue that O'Connor is considered a Catholic writer, and yet her stories are so violent that they do not seem spiritually hopeful or guiding. I think your paper will nicely cover and explore some of the very questions that I have had. I also really liked what you said about the "complacent heart," and how the characters need to be stripped down in order for redemption to reach them.

I thought the characters that you use are also very interesting. I have never thought of them in a positive light, so this has made me look at the characters in a new way.

I have run across a couple of quotes that may support your topic. If I can relocate them, I will send them your way.

Nice job, Vince!

Vince! I wasn't assigned to respond to your presentation, but I just want to let you know that (like Michelle) I love your paper topic! I also wrote down what you said about the characters needing to be stripped down; the act of violence must take place before grace can occur. Since much of my paper explores the character of Hulga/Joy, I was most interested in what you had to say about her fate. I just had one question about your approach to her character, and I may have missed something you said when I was writing it down, so I am sorry if I bring up a question that you have already answered...

O'Connor argues that Manly Pointer opens Hulga/Joy up to receiving grace, but I am wondering if O'Connor also argues that Hulga/Joy does, in fact, reach redemption? I am addressing this question in my paper, and I am slightly concerned that I am missing something in "Good Country People." I see Hulga/Joy being stripped down, and I see how she is finally capable of receiving grace, but does she? Is it that the betrayal demonstrated by Pointer breaks her down, and allows her to feel rather than think? Or is it more than that: does she actually receive grace?

Anyway...Vince, what we've already seen of your paper is insightful, and very interesting. Best of luck with finishing it!!

Thanks. And good question about Joy/Hulga. From what I've read, I can't say that she receives redemption, only that she is left in a position to receive it when the story ends.
